"Just" a Dad
Joe Saragusa, Lead Pastor
As I look around at the world, I see great athletes & great intellectuals. I see others with creative masterful craftsmen skills & I see incredible communicators... yet I never saw myself as any of those, and I have often wondered, "God, what have I done?" Then it hit me... I don't consider myself a craftsman, but in a moment of love and affection I realized I conceived a human being, a child. What an incredible feat in and of itself. Here is flesh of flesh and bone of my bone: a son, a daughter, and another son. All miracles. Two eyes. A nose. A living, breathing human being who will grow up and think thoughts, and cry tears, and shake hands, and tell jokes, and battle the odds and challenges of life. It is incredible that I fathered a child. And I am more than "just" a dad.
To be the father that my kids love and need is a learned skilled. I have to be intentional in finding helpful and consistent resources that will equip my effectiveness and efficiency. To be the father that my kids love and need is understanding that fathering is important. That the growth and health of my children are my responsibility and not just that of my wife.
In a culture that is saturated with high-priced politicians and popular personalities, athletes, and pop stars. I may never get the opportunity to stand in the light of celebrity or athletic stardom, but being the father that my kids need will one day have it's rewards. There's no telling how the reward will come in.
Perhaps it will be the squeeze of my daughter's hand... and tears will come to my eyes as I realize how wonderful it is to be loved by such a person. Maybe it will be a summer afternoon when I sit as an old man on the front porch in my rocker, not saying a word, simply looking out at my many grandchildren and enjoying the fact that I've done one of the most important jobs in the world and done it well.
All of those moments will be capped off knowing that my heavenly Father is smiling as He says, "Well done, you have been faithful. I called you to be a father and I gave you these children - the most precious people in the world and you raised them wonderfully." Then He says, "THANK YOU."
Then I understand that I have lived a life that matters... simply by being a father. I wish the same for every dad... and a very Happy Father's Day to each of you.
"Just" a Dad,

Pastor Joe
